Choosing the right wedding photographer is a big decision—after all, these are the photos that will help you relive your special day for years to come! To make sure you’re in safe hands, here are some crucial questions to ask before booking:

1. What backup equipment do you bring on the day?
A professional should always have multiple cameras, lenses, flashes, and memory cards. Equipment failure can happen, but your wedding shouldn’t suffer because of it!

2. How do you handle low-light ceremonies and darker venues?
Not all photographers are skilled at shooting in dimly lit churches or moody evening receptions. A tell tale sign in seeing lots of black and white images in full galleries without colour versions. Ask how they manage lighting—whether they use fast prime lenses, or external off camera flashlighting. Some will use the phrase natural light photographers to try and cover the fact they don’t how to use flash correctly.

3. How do you back up and store our wedding images?
This is a big one! Do they back up images in multiple locations? Are there cloud backups? A reliable photographer should have a rock-solid backup strategy to keep your memories safe.

4. Do you use professional screen calibration for editing?
Editing on an uncalibrated screen can lead to colours that look different across devices or in print. A professional will use colour-calibrated monitors to ensure accuracy in every final image.

5. What happens if you’re unable to shoot our wedding?
No one likes to think about it, but emergencies happen. Do they have a backup plan or a trusted network of professional photographers they can call upon?

6. Can we see full wedding galleries, not just highlights?
Anyone can put together a stunning portfolio, but consistency is key. Viewing full galleries will give you an idea of how they capture an entire wedding day, from getting ready to the dance floor moments.

7. Do you have a contract?
A professional photographer will always have a contract that outlines deliverables, timelines, and what happens in case of cancellations or unforeseen circumstances. This protects both you and them.

8. What’s your approach to photographing a wedding day?
Are they more documentary-style, capturing natural moments? Do they pose and direct a lot? Make sure their approach aligns with your vision for the day.

Asking these questions will help you feel confident that you’re booking a photographer who is prepared, experienced, and truly invested in capturing your wedding beautifully and safely.
