One of the most common questions wedding photographers are asked is:
“What happens if it rains on our wedding day?”
It is a perfectly understandable concern. Couples picture outdoor ceremonies, drinks on the lawn and beautiful photographs in the gardens, so naturally they want to know what the backup plan will be.
But there is another weather question that is rarely asked:
What happens if your wedding takes place during a heatwave?
Rain may change where photographs are taken, but extreme heat can affect almost every part of the wedding day. Timings, comfort, makeup, flowers, food, guests and even how long people can safely remain outside all need to be considered.
Heat Can Be More Challenging Than Rain
Rain is visible, so everyone immediately understands that the plans might need to change.
Heat can be deceptive.
A bright blue sky might look perfect in photographs, but standing outside in direct sunshine during the hottest part of the day can quickly become uncomfortable. Suits, waistcoats and wedding dresses are not usually designed for temperatures approaching 30°C.
Children may become tired, older guests can struggle, flowers can wilt and everyone may understandably lose enthusiasm for standing in the sun during a long list of group photographs.
A professional wedding photographer should be thinking about much more than simply finding a pretty background.
The Light Is Not Always Better
Bright sunshine does not automatically mean better wedding photographs.
Strong midday sunlight can create harsh shadows across faces, squinting, shiny skin and uneven patches of light. This is particularly noticeable when one person is standing in sunshine and another is in shade.
During a heatwave, I will usually look for areas of open shade, adjust the timing of photographs or use parts of the venue where the light is softer and more flattering.
The best-looking photograph is not always taken in the most obvious location. Sometimes moving a group just a few metres can make an enormous difference.
Timings May Need to Change
On an extremely hot wedding day, flexibility is essential.
Rather than taking all the couple photographs immediately after the ceremony, it may be better to photograph for a few minutes and then continue later in the day when the temperature has dropped.
The softer evening light is often more flattering too, making it a perfect time to step away for some natural photographs without keeping the couple away from their guests for long.
This is where experience matters. A professional photographer should be able to adapt the plan without making the day feel disrupted.
Group Photographs Should Be Efficient
Group photographs are important, but nobody wants to stand in direct sunshine for half an hour during a heatwave.
Before the wedding, I help couples create a sensible list of the photographs that genuinely matter. On the day, I work quickly, keep things organised and find a suitable shaded location whenever possible.
Having a nominated person who knows the families can also help gather everyone together while I arrange each group.
The aim is to capture the photographs properly without turning them into an endurance test.
Water, Shade and Breaks Matter
It sounds obvious, but hydration can easily be forgotten during a busy wedding morning.
Couples are often surrounded by people, getting dressed, opening gifts and watching the time. Suddenly, several hours have passed and they have barely had anything to drink.
Keep water nearby throughout the morning and make sure there is plenty available after the ceremony. Bridesmaids, groomsmen and family members can also help by reminding the couple to drink regularly.
Guests will appreciate shaded seating, water stations, fans and opportunities to step indoors. These small details can make a huge difference to how everyone experiences the day.
Think About the Ceremony Location
An outdoor ceremony may look beautiful, but it is worth thinking carefully about where the sun will be at the ceremony time.
Will guests be sitting in direct sunlight?
Will the couple be facing into the sun?
Will there be shade for elderly guests or young children?
It may be possible for the venue to adjust the position of the ceremony, provide parasols or move the ceremony slightly later. Having an indoor option is not only useful for rain. It can also be the safer and more comfortable choice during extreme heat.
Look After Your Suppliers Too
Photographers, videographers, coordinators, musicians and other suppliers may be working outside for many hours while carrying equipment and staying constantly alert.
Good suppliers will prepare carefully, bring water and adapt their clothing where possible, but access to drinks and short breaks is important during extreme temperatures.
Looking after the people working on your wedding helps them continue giving you their best throughout the day.
The Best Plan Is a Flexible One
No photographer can control the weather, but an experienced professional should know how to respond to it.
That might mean using the shade, changing the order of photographs, working more quickly, taking additional breaks or waiting until later in the evening for your couple portraits.
The photographs will still be beautiful. The important thing is making sure you and your guests can enjoy the day rather than spending it feeling uncomfortable.
So, when you are speaking to a potential wedding photographer, do not only ask:
“What happens if it rains?”
Ask them:
“What would you do if our wedding took place during a heatwave?”
Their answer may tell you far more about their experience, preparation and ability to look after you on the day.
