Why Sedgebrook Hall Is Perfect For Weddings

Sedgebrook Hall is a beautiful Northamptonshire country house wedding venue tucked away in 13 acres of landscaped grounds in Chapel Brampton, just outside Northampton. Combining the character of its 1861 Victorian manor house with modern wedding spaces, extensive gardens and on-site accommodation, it gives couples everything they need for the whole celebration in one place.

As a recommended wedding photographer at Sedgebrook Hall, I know just how much variety the venue gives us for photographs. From the warm ironstone manor house and its columned doorway to the sweeping staircase, the outdoor Pagoda and the tree-lined grounds, there are plenty of opportunities without disappearing from your guests for hours.

Sedgebrook Hall also gives you plenty of flexibility when planning the day. Larger celebrations can make use of the Oak Suite, while the Mulberry Suite works beautifully for smaller weddings. For something more intimate, the Elm Suite sits within the original Victorian Manor House, while the Pagoda provides a lovely setting for outdoor ceremonies.

My approach fits Sedgebrook Hall perfectly. I specialise in couples who don't particularly enjoy having their photograph taken, so there is no endless posing or turning your wedding into a photoshoot. I become part of the celebration, capture the genuine moments happening around me and give you a little guidance when it helps.

The History of Sedgebrook Hall

Sedgebrook Hall brings together the character of a nineteenth-century Northamptonshire country house with the facilities of a modern wedding venue. The original Victorian manor remains at the heart of the property, surrounded by extensive gardens and mature countryside.

Northamptonshire's Historic Environment Record documents a datestone at Sedgebrook Hall carrying the year 1861 together with the initials HP and EM. Historical accounts connect those initials with Henry Philip Markham and his wife Edith, with Henry credited with building the house in 1861. The name is thought to come from Sedgebrook Hall in Lincolnshire, the Markham family's ancestral home.

Henry Philip Markham was a prominent Northampton figure, working as an attorney and serving as Mayor of Northampton. The house was built from warm-coloured local sandstone and ironstone, giving it the golden character that still glows in late afternoon light today.

In 1915 the house passed to John Henry Marlow, head of the Northampton shoe manufacturer John Marlow & Sons. Sedgebrook Hall was hosting celebrations long before it became a wedding venue, including the 1928 wedding reception of his daughter Irene, which was widely covered in the newspapers of the day.

After the hall was sold in the early 1990s it became a hotel and events venue, keeping the original manor house at the heart of its identity. Today there are 103 bedrooms, 22 flexible event spaces and 13 acres of grounds.

From a photography point of view, I particularly like venues where we can create variety without making the photography dominate the wedding. Sedgebrook Hall gives us architecture, gardens, mature trees and open spaces all within easy reach of the celebration.
