The history of The Barns at Hunsbury Hill

The Barns at Hunsbury Hill are steeped in Northamptonshire history and countryside charm. Originally built around 1776, the barns formed part of a visionary 18th-century model farm created by Edward Bouverie, owner of nearby Delapré Abbey. Designed with precision and purpose, the buildings were carefully arranged around a central courtyard to make farm work more efficient - a pioneering concept at the time.

The site was originally used for mixed farming, combining grain and hay storage with livestock rearing. Over the following decades, additional feeding sheds were added as the farm shifted its focus towards fattening livestock for the Northampton market. For more than a century, the Shaw family were tenants here, maintaining the land and its distinctive stone buildings through changing times. In the late 19th century, the surrounding area became known for ironstone quarrying, which temporarily disrupted farming on the hill. By the early 1900s, agriculture had resumed, with livestock once again grazing the restored fields overlooking Northampton.

Today, the barns have been beautifully restored and preserved as a Grade II listed site, retaining their original stonework, oak beams, and rustic character. What was once a working farm is now a unique and atmospheric venue for wedding celebrations - blending historic architecture with contemporary comfort, and offering panoramic countryside views just moments from the heart of Northampton.
